Horn
Horns are among the acoustic warning devices found in vehicles. They are used to alert other road users to a hazard or the approach of a vehicle by means of an audible signal. Unlike backup alarms, they are typically activated manually and project sound primarily forward.
In the automotive sector, electrically powered horns are predominantly used today. Many models still operate on the principle of the so-called Wagner hammer.
Depending on the application, horns differ in terms of, among other things:
- Volume
- Frequency or pitch
- Design
- Operating voltage
In the industrial vehicle sector, horns are used in forklifts, construction machinery, and municipal vehicles, among others. There, they serve both to ensure traffic safety and to warn people in the immediate work environment.
In many countries, acoustic warning devices are required by law. In Germany e.g., Section 55 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) governs the basic requirements for audible warning devices.
