Lens (headlight)

In vehicle lighting, the term lens commonly refers to the transparent front element of a light or headlight. Depending on its design, it may contribute to the light distribution or primarily serve as a protective cover for the optical components inside.

The term originates in particular from a time when the front lens of a light itself played a significant role in shaping the light. To achieve this, prisms, grooves or other optical structures were incorporated into the lens. The light coming from the reflector was thereby specifically refracted and directed in specific directions. The diffuser lens was thus part of the optical system used to produce the desired beam pattern.

Lenses in modern lights

In many modern lights, the actual light distribution is already produced within the light itself, for example by specially shaped reflectors, optical lenses or other optical elements. The outer lens can then be largely transparent and primarily serves as a protective cover.

Nevertheless, the term lens is often still used for such transparent covers. Depending on the design, terms such as cover or cover plate may be more technically accurate if the component itself does not play a significant role in light distribution.

Diffusers or cover plates are now frequently made of transparent plastics such as polycarbonate. In addition to their optical properties, they must also withstand mechanical and thermal stresses as well as environmental influences. Changes to the surface, for example due to scratches, dirt or ageing, can impair light transmission and the intended light distribution.
