Beam patterns of work lights
The beam pattern of a work light describes how the emitted light is distributed in space. Depending on the application, broad illumination of the immediate working area, a greater range or targeted illumination of specific areas may be required. The luminous flux alone therefore does not determine whether a work light is suitable for a particular application. Two work lights with comparable luminous flux may illuminate completely different areas due to their differing beam patterns.
Comparison of beam patterns
The actual illumination provided by a work light can be assessed more accurately using a lighting diagram. This shows the illuminance achieved at various distances and in different areas.
Work lights utilise different light distributions. Typical beam patterns include:
Flood
Flood provides a significantly wide light distribution for illuminating a large working area. It combines wide illumination with a greater effective range than that of the Trapezoid beam.
Trapezoid beam
Trapezoid beam provides a more or less wide distribution of light for the immediate working area around a vehicle or a machine. A long range is not the primary focus here.
Spot
If a more concentrated light distribution is required for the targeted illumination of more distant areas, the spot beam pattern comes into its own. By concentrating the light, a higher luminous intensity is achieved in the main beam direction.
Mast light
The mast light provides a vertically extended light distribution for industrial trucks. It enables the illumination of different working heights and is specifically designed for work on lift masts and high-bay racking.
Special shapes and combinations
In addition to these beam patterns, there are other, more specialised light distributions. A pencil beam, for example, concentrates the light particularly intensely and is designed for a long range with a comparatively narrow illumination pattern.
Dual beam, on the other hand, does not refer to a specific beam pattern. A dual beam light combines two different light distributions or lighting functions within a single light. This allows the illumination to be adapted to different working situations.
