Key switch

A key switch is a mechanically operated switch that uses a matching key to control the electrical functions of a vehicle or machine. Among other things, it is used to activate the ignition, starter, drive enable functions, or specific operating modes.

Switch locks are used in many applications, such as industrial trucks, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, commercial vehicles, and aerial work platforms. They serve both for operation and to prevent unauthorized use.
Depending on the application, ignition switches differ in terms of:

  • Switching positions
  • Number and configuration of contacts
  • Operating voltage
  • Mounting type
  • Protection class and robustness

Many switch locks have several defined switch positions, such as Off, Ignition, Preheating, or Start. In electric vehicles, they are frequently used to turn the vehicle on and select various operating modes. Depending on their function, a distinction is made between start switches, ignition and start switches and ignition, heat and start switches.

In industrial environments, switch locks must often withstand high demands regarding vibration, humidity, temperature, and service life.

In addition to traditional mechanical switch locks, electronic access and starting systems are increasingly being used today. However, mechanical solutions continue to be used in many applications because they are robust, easy to integrate, and operate independently of digital systems.
