Front position lamp

A front position lamp is a forward-facing lighting function used to indicate the presence and width of a vehicle to other road users. It emits white light to the front and is not intended to illuminate the road.

Front position lamp is the terminology used in UN regulations for this specific lighting function. In German, the function is commonly referred to as ‘Standlicht’, although the technical German term is ‘Begrenzungslicht’.

In modern vehicle headlights, the front position lamp may be integrated into the same unit as other functions, such as the low beam headlight, daytime running lamp or direction indicator.
