ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines requirements for environmental management. It is one of the standards we have summarized in our overview of relevant standards and guidelines.
The current version is ISO 14001:2015. Like ISO 9001, it follows the High Level Structure (HLS) and is therefore compatible with other management system standards.

The objective of ISO 14001

The objective of ISO 14001 is to reduce the environmental impact of organizations and promote the responsible use of resources. The focus is on:

  • systematic identification of environmental aspects
  • reduction of emissions and waste
  • compliance with legal environmental requirements
  • continuous improvement of environmental performance

In doing so, the standard does not consider individual measures, but rather the entire management system.

We have been certified to DIN ISO 14001 since 2025.

Basic Principles

ISO 14001 is based on the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act), which ensures continuous improvement:

  • Plan: Define environmental objectives and measures
  • Do: Implement measures
  • Check: Monitor and evaluate results
  • Act: Derive improvements

In addition, the standard requires a risk-based approach to environmental aspects and opportunities.

Structure of the Standard

The structure of ISO 14001 follows the High Level Structure and includes, among others, the following areas:

  • Organizational Context
  • Leadership and commitment
  • Planning
  • Support
  • Operation
  • Performance evaluation
  • Improvement

Organizations must define appropriate processes for these topics and demonstrate their effectiveness.

Certification

ISO 14001 certification is carried out by independent, accredited bodies. During this process, the environmental management system is assessed to determine whether it meets the requirements of the standard. The certificate is generally valid for three years and is accompanied by regular surveillance audits.

As with ISO 9001, the standard does not prescribe specific measures. It defines requirements that must be implemented on an individual basis.

Practical Significance

ISO 14001 is the world’s leading standard for environmental management. It is used in industry, commerce, and the service sector and is often an integral part of sustainability strategies.

Typical benefits include:

  • Reduction of environmental impact
  • Better compliance with legal requirements
  • Greater transparency regarding environmental aspects
  • Strengthening of the company’s image

Overview

ISO 14001 is part of the ISO 14000 family, which comprises various standards for environmental management. It serves as the central foundation for certifiable environmental management systems.
